It was brilliant!

If you can’t light your action, then at least try to light your set. Dark figures moving around in a room can be spooky and still tell a story, but poorly lit figures in a big black meaningless space is hilarious. And not in the way “hilarious” is intended.

Ryan K. Johnson chided me at the beginning of filming Flesh of my Flesh because we had characters all dressed in black wandering around at night in a city that had no power. He was right to do so, and may my lesson help you!

So, I rewatched The Evil Dead to see how Raimi handled lighting the basement below the house. That was most novel!
