A review of Carrie Lacina’s book Hoof (Sera the Well-Adjusted Serial Killer).

Okay, so this was fun, and fun to read. And REALLY interesting.

Structurewise, I appreciated the short chapters. That keeps you coming back to the narrative.

I also appreciate that the main character, Sera, is not… super professional. We can’t all be Bret Easton Ellis, and Lacina’s created a character that kinda hurtles her way like she’s in a ragtag pinball game. Luck plays a factor with her, for the better and for the worst. Think of Sera as a character with a lot of HEART, but the best she understands as far as experience goes is… cloud-shaped drawings.

This luck also included a surprising amount of animal intelligence. About this I shall say no more, so that it may come as a joy to you as well, when you read it.

As others have said, I’m glad it came to a satisfying conclusion.
