Behind six million eyeblinks lies another world...
A human being blinks about ten times a minute, and in that fraction of a second, the brain shuts itself down, so there is no perception of the darkness, or even the passage of time during the blink. Everyone's existence appears seamless, but is constantly punctuated by periods of unseen dark existence. At any moment, there is a hole in perception, a cognitive-blind place where someone is mid-blink.
In this place, this ephemeral web of existence spread across the human experience, there are things, places, and life. Hidden from eyes, it is the shadows within the shadows, the teeth in the dark, the true Secrets of the World, and usually, it can only be found in the space of an eyeblink.
Usually.
Blinkspace explores that Secret World, and brings it out into the open, to properly drive you mad. Read, enjoy, comment, and share us with others.
Blinkspace publishes new content regularly at this exact spot (bookmark us, or subscribe via RSS), and our schedule includes an annual PDF/print Best Of edition.
I never figured I’d come back to a carnival story, but at the last minute, the freakish sadness of Inside Out needed out of my head. I hope you like it!
The Score is a story that I’ve been wanting to tell for a long time, but have never quite figured out exactly how. Then, just a couple days ago, I realized what it was missing. It was missing love.
Sometimes we learn the lessons of life’s perspective in such a way that we cannot do anything more with the knowledge but let it burn our last moments.
I have to say that X is the story that got it all started. X is a story parts of which I came up with in grade school, parts in high school, and parts throughout my life. X is a story I’ve been wanting to tell for a long, long time. But interestingly, I had forgotten about this story until just recently. Life imitates art?
I try to make it a rule never to have characters being dumb. I know, sometimes one has issues one has to deal with, such as being forced to attend a private school that only specializes on Bronze Age teachings, but that’s different. I’m talking about really thinking, really considering what’s going on. I hope Making the Deal helps somehow rectify a great imbalance…
I couldn’t get the phrase “The Damned Thing” out of my head. I was at the Lovecraft Bar (which makes sense, I suppose) and I noticed how loud the music was and thought to myself “Well, damn, pretty much anything could walk in that door...
I don’t think I’ve ever written anything that could qualify as a Western until now, although I might have done so during that time I spent in the opium dens of the far East. Oh wait, that wasn’t me — that was some guy on TV. The Carnival has a lot of my favorite things in it, although my own experiences with Appaloosas wasn’t as positive.
Been a lot of longer stories lately, but somehow, this one crept in. I found myself wanting to expand, wanting to go deeper, but the fact of the matter is that this was exactly the story that came into my head, and it made the most sense to tell it exactly as it came to me.
Vows has followed a very peculiar path. Initially, it was based on a movie I made quite a few years ago, but as I started writing it, it unfolded in a very different way than I expected. Which is good, I think!
My first commission for Lynne, The Collector is the sort of story I’ve always wanted to make as a short movie. Although I think I’d leave certain bits out — such as (in this case) references to Twitter. Because, of course, who uses Twitter in 2014...?
The Knot started out as a brief moment in watching the results of one of my buddy’s 48-hour Film Festival entries. While I’m disinclined to participate in the 48HFF, nevertheless, I’m glad I watched their entry, as it started the seed for this story.

A Cycle of Echoes is a bit complicated — I kinda wrote it backwards. Which makes a certain kind of sense once you read it twice. Which I hope you’ll do.
Scales is a story that took a long time to cook. I’m not sure I can wish you to enjoy it per se, but on the other hand, I do hope it stays with you as much as it’s staying with me.
